THE POET OF THE ORDINARY

(BROCHURE DESIGN)

Designed a brochure centered on René Magritte, addressing the challenge of translating his complex, conceptual imagery into a clear and structured editorial format. Using a roll fold layout, each panel was designed to function both independently and as part of a continuous sequence, requiring careful control of pacing, hierarchy, and content flow. A refined grid and minimalist typographic system balance the surreal visuals, maintaining clarity without diminishing their impact. The final piece demonstrates strong control of layout, composition, and visual storytelling.

PROCESS

PROCESS

The brochure development started with close study of René Magritte’s visual language, focusing on how ordinary objects are reframed to feel unfamiliar and thought provoking. Instead of directly imitating his imagery, the approach translated that idea into structure and pacing. A roll fold format was selected early, allowing the content to unfold in a controlled sequence, revealing information in layers rather than all at once. Grid systems and typographic hierarchy were tested to maintain clarity while still allowing moments of disruption that echo surrealist tension. Image placement, scale, and negative space were carefully adjusted to create contrast between simplicity and intrigue, ensuring the brochure felt minimal but not static. Iterations refined how each panel transitions into the next, balancing readability with a sense of discovery.

SOLUTION

SOLUTION

The final brochure captures the essence of the ordinary made strange through a restrained and intentional system. The roll fold structure guides the viewer through a gradual reveal, mirroring the way Magritte’s work shifts perception over time. Clean typography and a disciplined grid provide stability, while imagery introduces moments of ambiguity and depth. The result is a piece that remains highly legible yet conceptually engaging, demonstrating control over layout, sequencing, and visual storytelling while staying true to the poetic subtlety of the source material.
